The San Diego Science Festival, in conjunction with the You CAN Do The Rubik's Cube Foundation, have announced the 2010 Rubik's Cube Tournament competition. Eight-member student teams from more than 40 K-12 schools in San Diego County will compete for the fastest collective time in solving 25 Rubik's Cubes. School team will be vying for a share of $5,000 in prize money that will be awarded during the final round to math teachers for use in improving math education.
This brain twisting challenge is sure to excite the minds of our local students. Math and science teachers, as well as leaders of other not-for-profit organizations serving K-12 aged students, are invited to sign up their student teams. You CAN Do The Rubik's Cube is a math education initiative that works with schools to easily integrate Rubik's Cubes into school math curricula to help motivate students to pursue math and science studies.
The Tournament is part of the 2010 San Diego Science Festival. All teams will compete in a preliminary round on Thursday, March 25, 2010 (Location TBD).
Top teams emerging from the preliminary competition round from each division (K-8 & high school) will advance to the final Tournament to be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 as part of the San Diego Science Festival Expo Day at PETCO Park. In addition to the cash prizes awarded to math teachers for school program improvement, top team members will receive trophies and every student competitor will receive a free Rubik's Cube T-shirt and certificate.
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
Division 1- (K-8) Division 2 - (9-12)
Grand Prize - $1,000 Grand Prize - $1,000
1st Prize - $750 1st Prize - $750
2nd Prize - $450 2nd Prize - $450
3rd - $100 3rd Prize - $100
4th - $100 4th Prize - $100
5th - $100 5th Prize - $100

The first 60 schools or organization to register for the Tournament will receive a FREE You CAN Do The Rubik's Classroom Math Education Kit containing 12 cubes, solution instructions, and math education instructional suggestion software. Other schools/organizations may receive these kits at a special discounted price, as can school contestant teams desiring to purchase additional classroom kits. * Preliminary Event - will be held on Thursday, March 25th. However, depending upon the number of teams participating, preliminaries may run over two days beginning Wednesday, March 24th.
