Biocom Institute Initiatives
Building on BIOCOM's long history of serving the regional life science community, the BIOCOM Institute was created to support science education and to build pioneering opportunities for students, teachers, and scientists to work with the life science industry. The mission of the BIOCOM Institute is to serve as a bridge between learning institutions and life science companies to create comprehensive education initiatives that advance scientific literacy.
The Institute has been successful at partnering with key agencies, life science companies, and learning institutions to encourage systemic change through collaboration and outreach. These communities have come together to create innovative solutions for meeting local and state science education and workforce needs. The BIOCOM Institute helps to ensure a prosperous and productive future for our industry and helps to empower change in our education system.
PADRES Field Trip Day at PETCO Park
The PADRES second annual Science Field Trip DAY at PETCO Park will be held on Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 at 10:00am! This unique educational experience takes science out of the classroom and makes learning fun. The pre-game event includes a visually thrilling and infomative "Fire and Ice" show presented by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, and Ecovivarium show featuring snakes and insects, and much more! Additionally, participation includes a Padres player appearance and discounted admission to watch the Padres take on the Rockies at 12:05pm! Bio EASI grade 6- 12 Extension Classes
BioEASI at UC San Diego has teamed up with the UC San Diego Extension School's K12 College Exploration program to offer "thinking outside the box" creative science courses for K-12 students. During Winter quarter, we are offering three courses geared toward middle school and high school students exploring neurobiology, genetic engineering and the diversity of life. All courses are designed and taught by UC San Diego Biology Ph. D students who are actively conducting research and are eager to share their experiences with students!

Science Festival K-12 Booth Tips
Extend Learning Outside the Classroom & Build the STEM Pipeline
There are many ways that teachers and educators can get involved in the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering:
- Mark your classroom calendar for Festival Week and EXPO DAY at PETCO Park, March 17-24th 2012
- Apply for a Nifty 50 speaker to visit your classroom or organization (Closed for 2012)
- Sign up your classroom to create an interactive booth for EXPO DAY (Closed for 2012)
- Provide class lessons around Festival events
- Provide “credit for attendance” opportunities at EXPO DAY, our signature events, or collaborator events
- Volunteer with the Festival and help the community
The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering provides a variety of exciting events and activities to encourage kids of all ages to participate. Most opportunities are hands-on and provide students with an opportunity to meet field scientists and engineers from the community, to learn something new about the world around them and to truly excite their minds with discoveries they may have never dreamed of.
