MORE
All participants will use a standardized solar cell and motor. With the exception of a few specification regulations, unlimited ingenuity and inventiveness can be used in car construction. Awards will be given for design in addition to the track event itself. Junior Solar Sprint is a national hands-on program - see http://www.nrel.gov/education/jss_hfc.html. It aims to generate enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math at a crucial stage in the development of young people. This opportunity to design, build, and race their own solar powered model cars helps students better understand scientific concepts and renewable energy technologies and encourages them to consider technical careers at an early age.
Please visit the SDRES JSS website http://sdres.org/jss/juniorsolarsprint.html. Then fill out and return a team registration form found at http://www.sdres.org/jss/forms.html. Registration forms are due by March 13th to ensure your team's participation in the competition. On March 20th a teacher seminar will be held at the California Center for Sustainable Energy to review competition requirements and provide teachers with resources and training for building the cars and teaching the Junior Solar Sprint curriculum. Liability waivers for students and coaches participating in the event are also due on March 20th.
How do I order supplies ?
Junior Solar Sprint Kits can be purchases through Solar World at http://www.solarworld.com. A limited number of kits will also be available for purchase through SDRES and will be available at the teacher seminar on March 20th.
How much does it cost ?
The full Junior Solar Sprint kit includes a solar panel, a motor and gears and costs $29.99. The motor and solar panel from Solar World are the only motor and solar panel which may be used. Teams may share solar panels to reduce the number of solar panels which need to be purchased. Additional solar panels can be purchased for $27.99, motors for $1.75 and motor mounts for $1.50. The kit does not contain components to build the body of a model car. The spirit of the competition is one of innovation and exploration and the design of the vehicles is not limited to specific body designs, wheel requirements or solar panel positioning.
